SHERWOOD, Ark. – Sylvan Hills High School students had the opportunity to step outside the classroom and into the professional world this week through the Arkansas Children’s Hospital and local businesses.
On Tuesday, October 21, more than 80 students from the Arkansas Children’s Academy of Business toured Arkansas Children’s Hospital to learn about the wide range of careers available in the business side of healthcare. The day began with a welcome session at 9:30 a.m., followed by an industry fair-style tour of career booths from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Students wrapped up the experience with lunch before returning to campus.
Meanwhile, students in the Travel & Tourism pathway explored Argenta in downtown North Little Rock, including stops at Simmons Bank Arena and Caverns & Forests Board Game Café. These visits gave students a firsthand look at becoming an entrepreneur, event management, and tourism.
The Travel & Tourism pathway at Sylvan Hills High School prepares students for careers in the hospitality industry, including hotel management, customer service, restaurant operations, tourism attractions, and travel advising.
Sophomore Kaylee Murphy reflected on the experience, saying, “Sometimes learning new things can make new interests.”
The career-focused tours are part of a two-day event coordinated by the Academies of Central Arkansas. On Wednesday, October 22, more than 100 students from the Academy of Medical Sciences will return to Arkansas Children’s Hospital to explore careers in medicine.
Through partnerships like these, the Pulaski County Special School District continues to provide students with meaningful opportunities to explore career options and prepare for life beyond graduation.
